Dog Licensing Process

California State law requires all dogs in California must be licensed by the local agency providing animal control services.  In Kern County, a dog cannot be licensed until the owner provides proof of a current rabies vaccination or a letter from a vet stating why this dog cannot be vaccinated.

 Requirements for licensing a dog:

 Current Rabies Certificate:

Provide a copy of a valid Rabies Vaccination Certificate issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian.  A license can be obtained for either one, two or three years but cannot exceed the expiration date of the rabies vaccination.

 Spay or Neuter Certificate:

To obtain a discounted license rate, submit a copy of the spay or neuter certificate issued by your veterinarian.  The certificate should provide a complete description of the dog and date of surgery. This is not necessary if your rabies certificate indicates that the dog is spayed or neutered.

 Licensing:

Complete licensing service is available on Mondays (not holidays) from 11AM to 2PM at the Tehachapi Humane Society office, 21600 Golden Star Blvd., Unit 3, Tehachapi.   We are located at the corner of Golden Hills and Golden Star Blvds.  We also license the second Saturday of the month, Shot Clinic day from 10AM to 12 PM.  We accept cash or checks, but are unable to accept credit cards in payment.  Questions, please call 661-823-0699 menu 3.

Licensing is also available at:  Kern County Animal Control Services, 201 S. Mt. Vernon, Bakersfield, CA 93307, 661-868-7127, www.co.kern.ca.us/ACD/services.asp  or at the shelter in Mojave, 923 Poole Street, located at the Mojave airport.  Applications for licensing are available on line at:  www.co.kern.ca.us/ACD/pdfs/DogLicenseApplicationForm.pdf

 Replacement Tags:

If a dog tag is lost or worn out, a replacement tag can be obtained for $5 through our office.    Provide a copy of your last licensing application and a new tag will be issued.  You can also contact Kern County Animal Control Services for a new one.
